Uttar Pradesh to Begin Daily Monitoring of STPs — A Milestone in Wastewater Management

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a significant policy change in its approach to wastewater management. All Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) across the state will soon be monitored on a daily basis to ensure consistent treatment efficiency and better environmental outcomes. Background
As of early 2025, Uttar Pradesh has a total of 152 operational STPs with a combined treatment capacity of 4,651 million liters per day (MLD). These STPs play a vital role in treating municipal sewage and preventing untreated wastewater from entering rivers and groundwater sources. However, gaps in monitoring and data collection have often led to inefficiencies, especially during periods of increased load such as festivals and large public events. One such instance occurred during preparations for Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, where testing revealed high levels of fecal coliform bacteria in the Ganga and Yamuna rivers. Despite deploying temporary STPs and advanced oxidation methods, the results highlighted the need for more consistent oversight and early detection of failures in treatment operations.
New Monitoring Framework
In response, the state government is setting up a dedicated STP Monitoring Cell under the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB). This specialized unit will include technical experts and officials who will collect and review performance data from all STPs across the state on a daily basis. The system will enable prompt alerts if a plant underperforms or operates below its designated capacity, allowing authorities to take corrective action immediately. The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, has approved this proposal and further emphasized the formation of specialized cells to separately handle solid waste, liquid waste, biomedical waste, and hazardous waste.
